BC Releases Standardized Housing Design Catalogue

The BC Ministry of Housing has released their promised guide for standardized housing designs with the ideal of "People building small-scale, multi-unit housing can plan faster and at a lower cost by using free standardized designs". The guide provides examples for Accessory Dwellings, Duplexes, Triplexes, Quadplexes, and Townhomes, and considers three different lot sizes.

Most of the example designs locate the dwelling units side-by-side, which allows application of less onerous spatial design rules for houses in Subsection 9.10.15. and waiving of the floor assembly fire-resistance ratings within the dwellings. It is of note that the example Triplex design is a stacked dwelling design, which invokes the full spatial design rules of Subsection 9.10.14. and requires floor assemblies to have a fire-resistance rating - something to be aware of, as floor assembly fire-resistance ratings often cause challenges with ducting and lighting penetrations.

Supporting UVic Engineering

The UVic Engineering Society held their fall Club day on September 19th, and Marc Showers, Corie Lubben, and I were invited to have a table and talk shop with the engineering students. Our friends at RJC Victoria were also there.

It was a great event where each of the Engineer clubs showcased their activities to new and returning students, looking to attract new members for the term ahead.
